Alcântara LX55 Building

Located in one of Lisbon’s areas undergoing the most significant urban transformation, the LX55 building is the result of a partial demolition and complete reconstruction project, preserving its connection to Alcântara’s industrial and riverside surroundings.

The development spans five floors and comprises eight residential units, including duplexes and a penthouse on the top floor. All apartments include parking and, in some cases, outdoor spaces, enhancing their connection to natural light and their south-facing orientation.

The renovation preserves the existing ceramic-clad facade, highlighting its original materiality and texture, while the new addition features a zinc-clad mansard roof. This contrast establishes a dialogue between the artisanal and fragmented character of the ceramic tiles and the contemporary, continuous, and homogeneous appearance of the zinc.

The project thus explores the tension between preservation and transformation, reinforcing the building’s identity through the layering of time periods, materials, and construction systems. The relationship with LX Factory and the surrounding industrial fabric further enhances this interpretation, situating the building within a context of evolving urban renewal.
